Musical Freestyle
Dressage Musical Freestyle combines the elegance and beauty as well as the power and strength of the horse with the stirring impact of music. This creative expression of the horse-rider relationship is entertaining and offers great audience appeal. The tests are offered from First to Fourth levels through the USDF, while the FEI is responsible for Para Equestrian, Junior Young Riders, Young Riders, Intermediate I, Grand Prix, and FEI Pony. Musical Freestyles are a component of the dressage competition at the Olympics, and World Equestrian Games.
Who Can Do It?
The horse and rider combination must be secure in the execution of all the technical requirements. It is recommended that they compete in freestyle one level below that which they are showing in order to maintain quality in their presentation.
There is an eligibility requirement for entering and competing in a freestyle class at a United States Equestrian Federation recognized competition. Check the USDF Freestyle Rules and Guidelines for details.
Technical Requirements
The technical requirements of each level mirror the training and balance expected in the compulsory tests for that level. Technical Execution (the judging of the compulsory elements) and Artistic Impression both count for 50% of the score sheet. However the technical components of Rhythm, Energy and Elasticity and the Harmony Between Horse and Rider are scored on under Artistic Impression, revealing the great importance of competence and ease in the execution of the movements.
Music
The music chosen will depend on the horse's movement, type, personality and the rider's own musical tastes, but should serve to accentuate all of them. The various pieces should also match the tempos of his gaits. Music can be found in a variety of genres and styles such as classical, show tunes, movie scores, rock, orchestral versions of pop and so on. Whichever you choose, the same genre should be used throughout the freestyle in order to create a cohesive flow in the musical style. Listen to your music carefully. Can you hear parts that sound like a half pass or leg yield; a transition; a lengthening? Finding the right music can be challenging but fun. Use traditional and online music stores and your local library. Some dressage websites offer musical freestyle databases.
Choreography
The choreography offers the opportunity to be creative and to show what the horse does well. It must incorporate all the technical requirements for the level, avoid those from above the designated level, and choose a degree of difficulty that corresponds to the horse's abilities so that the ride looks easy. The horse and rider combination must be secure in the execution of all the technical requirements for that level. Interpretation is also a key element. Movements and figures should be started at the beginning of musical phrases, and dynamics such as crescendos can be used to support more powerful movements like extensions. This makes the horse and rider appear to be dancing to its musical accompaniment.
Editing
Smooth editing is essential. Transitions between the musical selections should flow without gaps or pauses. This can be done by a professional service or on a home computer that has an editing program.
**USDF Freestyle Awards**
The USDF recognizes achievement in freestyle performance with both year-end and cumulative achievement awards. The Adequan Musical Freestyle Award is an annual horse and rider award with prizes to winners at First through Fourth Levels, Intermediate I and Grand Prix. The USDF Musical Freestyle Bar is a cumulative rider award. It parallels the USDF Rider Medal awards with Bronze representing First through Third Levels, Silver for Fourth Level or for JR/YR the Prix St. Georges FS, and Gold for Intermediate I/Intermediate II and Grand Prix. A Musical Freestyle Bar can only be awarded after a rider has earned the respective regular USDF Bronze, Silver or Gold Medals. A rider can earn a Freestyle Bar in the same year as they are earning a respective medal. See our awards page for more information.

Pas de Deux
Pas de Deux combines the elegance and impact of dressage musical freestyle with the added element of two horses and riders performing together. Competitive Pas de Deux must include movements and figures are choreographed to meet the technical requirements of the particular level with music chosen to highlight the pair. Pas de Deux has great spectator and audience appeal due to the increased dynamic of two horses and riders dancing in the arena.
But Pas de Deux is not only for competition. There are occasions where it becomes a feature attraction at a luncheon, special event, charity function, or demonstration at a show. In these cases, the rules may be put aside and more festive attitude taken. Music may reflect the season, event, or may be chosen to echo the particular team. At these affairs, costuming may even be used to express the music and ride, as well as added to the entertainment value.
Pas de Deux has great spectator and audience. Making it a tremendous benefit to the promotion of the sport of dressage.
Who Can Do It?
There is no eligibility requirement for entering and competing in Pas de Deux, but the horse and rider combination must be secure in the execution of all the technical requirements for the level they choose to show. The greater the team's command of the required elements, the more successful they are likely to be in timing the choreography to the music.
Starting the Journey
It is first necessary to be familiar with the score sheet as well as the rules. Because the quality of execution is judged as a whole, the same score sheet is used for all competitive levels from Training through Grand Prix. International Pas de Deux competition is under the jurisdiction of the FEI and uses the Freestyle score sheet from the same level. That score sheet is available through the USEF. Once you have chosen the level you wish to compete and have all your information at hand, you are set to go.
The Score Sheet
The technical requirements of each level reflect the training and balance expected in the compulsory tests at that level. Technical Execution affects fifty percent of the total score, revealing the need for competence and ease in the execution of the movements. In Pas de Deux, the compulsory elements are judged as: Performance as a Pair (spacing, alignment, synchrony), Accuracy and Quality of Execution, and Impulsion and Submission. Compulsory movements are not scored individually, but are taken as a whole, thus emphasizing the need for solid technical execution.
Artistic Impression is the remaining fifty percent of the score and is comprised of Harmony Between Horses and Riders, Choreography, and Musicality.
Choreography
The choreography must incorporate all the technical requirements listed on the score sheet for the level the team has declared. All requires elements must be done by both horses and performed on both reins.
Choreography includes: balance, creativity, difficulty, and construction (design). Pas de Deux offers the opportunity for horses and riders to dance side by side, and or as mirror images, and or in-line as in follow the leader. These variations can all be incorporated into the choreography, adding dimension and visual appeal to both judges and spectators. Good choreography flows from one movement to the next with the music; utilizing the whole arena, and demonstrating the ease of the side-by-side, mirror images, and in-line variations.
Music
Music selection should serve to accentuate the two horse and rider pairs. Matching strict tempo to both horses is not required. The music chosen must suggest the gait, and provide musical phrasing that can be interpreted through choreography. Does the musical phrase sound like a ten-meter circle? Does it sound like a leg yield or a half pass? Music for Pas de Deux is a wellspring of choices: classical, rock, jazz, pop, Broadway, soundtracks, even vocals. Just as in musical freestyles, maintaining a theme throughout is paramount. It is important to stay within the same musical genre. Using jazz for the trot and rock for the canter is jarring for both judges and audience. Pas de Deux offers riders a wonderful opportunity to tell a story through music and movements.
Editing
Smooth editing is essential, especially since it is part of the music score. Transitions between the musical selections must flow without gaps or pauses. These "hiccups" of bad editing cause judges and spectators to loose their connection with your performance. Digital editing allows music to be edited note by note for a seamless musical program. This can be done in a professional studio or on a home PC that has a software-editing package.
